COLUMBUS, Ohio — The cold weather on Monday was causing a potentially dangerous problem, as frozen fire hydrants were reported around the city.

The Columbus Division of Power and Water said nearly 140 of the city's fire hydrants were frozen Monday, 10TV News reported.

Crews were working to melt ice inside the hydrants, using 180 degree heated water. Once melted, the water is then flushed and drained to a level below the hydrant's thaw line, to ensure it doesn't refreeze.

"It takes between 45 minutes to an hour to thaw one of these out," said division of water employee David Rodriquez. "I try to average about six to eight a day."

The city maintains more than 23,000 fire hydrants.
