The fire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. at Stewart Alternative Elementary School, located at 40 Stewart Ave., 10TV's Patrick Bell reported.
Flames devoured the inside of the building, causing about $100,000 in damage.
"I'd say moderate to severe damage on the first floor and second floor of the building," said Columbus fire Battalion Chief Sean Moore. "The fire did burn through the floor. There's a hole in the floor, so I don't believe the building will open on time for school this year."

Investigators believe someone started the fire inside a closet on the building's first floor, Bell reported.
When firefighters entered the burning building, they found a man on the first floor. Police officers brought him out in handcuffs and was taken to a medic for treatment, Bell reported.
Investigators were working to determine why the man was inside at the time of the fire. He was arrested, but was not charged in connection with the fire, authorities said.
Administrators with Columbus City Schools said late Friday afternoon that children who attend Stewart will start the upcoming school year at nearby Beck Elementary.
